The food: Modern Irish
Bastible Dublin

Contemporary Irish dining from chef/owner Barry Fitzgerald, former head chef at Etto and the Michelin starred Harwood Arms in London, and partner Claire-Marie Thomas. Bastible focused on the best seasonal produce from day one, and after a five star review from the Irish Times shortly after opening in 2015 they were booked out months in advance. Things had gone back to semi-normal until ex-Noma chef Cuan Greene came on board as head chef in mid-2019, to more rave reviews, so advance booking is advised.

"I don’t often mention chefs’ names but head chef Cúán Greene in Bastible is one to remember — what he and chef-owner Barry Fitzgerald are doing needs to be experienced. I’m glad I went on a Sunday as this was as close to a religious experience as I’m ever likely to have." Food 9.5/10. Value 8.5/10.

"...most of us will never get to eat at Noma, even if we could pony up the guts of a grand that the table and travel costs. Bastible is no poor woman’s consolation prize. It is a beautifully memorable food experience, a steal at €55 for the tasting menu, and the start of something truly bloody exciting. " 9.5/10

"The main course is saddle and neck of lamb, the former slightly pink and tender; the latter unctuously dark and rich, served with roasted turnip, white beans and wild garlic. It's ostensibly a simple dish, yet so much more elevated than anything one is ever going to produce at home for Sunday lunch, and very, very good." Food 9/10. Value 9/10.

"...many would call this a (ferociously) trendy restaurant but do not let this put you off — there is a reason things become trendy and that is because they suit our mood right now and how could this be a bad thing? Go soon for the tightly focused and measured seasonal cooking, charming staff, and fine flavours." Food 7/10. Value 8/10.

Gillian Nelis, Sunday Business Post

"Two lovely cod and leek croquettes came with homemade kimchi and a spicy mayonnaise, while the beef carpaccio with little pieces of pickled pear and a proper salad cream was equally good. Mini doughnuts made with smoked Gubbeen and wheat beer were heavy, but irresistibly tasty."

"Bastible is not another neighbourhood restaurant. It’s the best restaurant I’ve been to in Dublin this year." 5/5
