The food: Small Plates, Wine Bar
Frank's watermelon.jpg

Walk-in only wine bar Frank’s rolled in on the hype train and pretty soon two hours waits at the weekend were the norm. Their pared back operation means there’s no phone, email or queueing system that allows you to leave and come back when your table is ready, but you can perch outside drinking wine until then. The small plates menu from Canadian chef Chris Maguire is constantly changing and never dull. *Update: As of January 2020 Frank's take a limited amount of bookings each night.

"Our favourite plate, and, no coincidence, the most flavoursome, is 'quail, plum, chanterelles', featuring a tiny leg and a tranche of terrine; the chanterelles anointed with chive oil. Some sourdough for mopping the tasty sauce would have been good, but Frank's doesn't serve bread." Food 7/10. Value 7/10.

"I know it’s all very cool and so on, but I’ve had amazing small plates with much better ingredients at lower prices in other places."

"Frank's is not just brilliant, it's generous almost to a fault."

"Franks is a casual wine bar with a great wine list serving small plates of top quality, freshly prepared food around a communal table, a wonderful addition to an already vibrant part of the city." Food 8.5/10. Value 8/10.

"Frank’s boils the restaurant experience down to its bones, lean and spare and utterly in tune with the casual “let’s go get a bite” urge that feels easier than planning and booking a table in an actual restaurant. The delight is that the food at Frank’s is better than most sit-at-a-table restaurants." 9/10.
