The food: Modern Irish
Volpe Nera - Venison Carpaccio.jpg

Ex- Etto head chef Barry Sun’s first solo restaurant Volpe Nera (meaning black fox) opened in between Blackrock and Foxrock in 2019, and every critic who walked through the doors was wowed. The menu has a lot of similarities to Italian/Irish Etto (which can only be a good thing) with the occasional Asian flourish, like the cep dumpling with aged soya, trompettes and chives. Grown up and comfortable dining room over two floors with table and bar seating.

"We emerge into the day refreshed after the loveliest of lunches, world put nearly to rights and happy. Head to the burbs folks. Good things happen there." 9/10

"In anyone's terms, this is a 'rave review'. The service at Volpe Nera, led by Darren Darcy, ex L'Ecrivain, is exemplary, while the food by Chef Barry is top-notch, elegant cuisine at neighbourhood-nosh prices - even the music is divine."

"...if the rest of the meals I eat this year are half as good, I will be a very lucky woman. Book early and often for Volpe Nera, the happy new home of one of the country’s finest chefs."

"My advice? Beat a path to Barry's door."
