The food: Salads, sandwiches

Tiller + Grain's owner/chef Clair Dowling worked for Ottolenghi and Skye Gyngell in London, before bringing her flavour-popping salads and sandwiches to Dublin city centre. Meat and fish is cooked on an indoor barbecue, bread is from Bread 41, fruits and vegetables are predominantly Irish and seasonal, and it's hard to surpass the flavours in their salads, like freekah with preserved lemon, olives and chicory, and purple broccoli with blood orange buttermilk dressing and toasted pistachios. Not the cheapest lunch option in town but you get what your pay for.

"If ever there was the café to dispel, once and for all, the notion that eating well and eating sustainably has to be a trial, this is surely it. It certainly injected plenty of sunshine and good vibes into my day..."

"Tiller and Grain is serving food that’s been tasted, tweaked and then recalibrated until there’s a rightness that makes the stuff of other salad bars (even the pomegranate pretenders) look like sludgy sameness." 8.5/10.

Tom Doorley - Irish Daily Mail

"...the kind of salads served at Tiller + Grain are salads in the sense that James Joyce could string a few sentences together. They are the antithesis of the salads with which people of my generation grew up."
