Expansions, second sites, and summer popups gone permanent – if there’s a theme to thread in the latest batch of new openings around town, it’s established names stepping up and striking out to big(ger) new things...

Nippon-Kan, Capel Street
Are we at peak matcha yet? Not if the opening crowds at Nippon-Kan are anything to go by. The new Capel Street café has slipped into the space previously occupied by ill-fated booze-free bar The Virgin Mary, and comes from the folks behind Daruma over the river (also in Malahide). Cast in the same mold as Matcha Matsukawa, where another Japanese restaurant brand proved the market for hojicha lattes and greened pastries galore, you can hardly blame them for following suit. What really interests us here is less grid-friendly traditional tea prep and matcha donut tears, than the word that an open kitchen and retail offering is to follow – we’ll be keeping close tabs.
