The Two Minute Review: Nippon-Kan

Please, not another matcha café

 

That’s not quite the pitch here, even if it is likely to prove part of the draw. A bigger trend in the city that Nippon-Kan is riding is multi-purpose usage – all the better to meet the crippling rent costs that put paid to previous tenant, booze-free bar The Virgin Mary. This new don’t-call-it-a-café from the folks behind Daruma boasts big things to come across the three distinct spaces that make up the site, and a much more sensible plan than the building's owners originally envisioned.


 

What was that then?

 

Look, we’ve only got two minutes here, but let’s just say we’re not shocked to say Irish Distillers Ltd’s VIP plans including “celebrity bedroom” didn’t quite work out. The Jameson parent company’s half-cooked concept for an event space explains the copper pot still punctuating the peace of the Japanese garden newly installed out back - maybe a hotspot for corporate Christmas bookings to come?
